Strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake shakes Sabah waters, no tsunami threat
The epicentre was 49km west of Kudat, Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU - A strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck waters off Sabah at 12.57am today but posed no tsunami threat.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said in a statement this morning that the epicentre was located at coordinates 7.0 degrees North and 116.4 degrees East, at a depth of 678 kilometres (km).
“The epicentre was 49km west of Kudat, Sabah.
“Tremors were felt across Sabah as well as in several areas in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia,” the statement said.
MetMalaysia added that it would continue to monitor the situation from time to time.
The department also urged members of the public who felt the tremors to provide information by completing a questionnaire via the link https://forms.gle/bRkJBUqLEPAf8KVw9.
Meanwhile, the Operations Control Centre of the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that no untoward incidents had been reported following the earthquake.
“We have been informed that, so far, no emergency calls related to the earthquake have been received.
“All stations are carrying out patrols and monitoring in their respective areas to ensure public safety and that the surrounding environment remains safe and under control,” it said when contacted. - BERNAMA
