Tengku Zafrul appointed senior political advisor to PM

KUALA LUMPUR - Former Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has been appointed Senior Political Advisor to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a two-year term effective today.

In a statement today, the Prime Minister’s Office said the appointment was made to fill the vacancy of Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister.

In the same statement, the Prime Minister expressed hope that Tengku Zafrul would carry out the responsibility entrusted to him with dedication and humility for the prosperity of the nation and the well-being of the people.

Tengku Zafrul ended his service as a minister under the MADANI Government on Dec 2, following the end of his tenure as a Senator.

The post of Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister fell vacant after Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin resigned from the position on Nov 25.

Tengku Zafrul, who is currently chairman of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), also served as Finance Minister from March 9, 2020 to Nov 9, 2022.

Born on June 25, 1973 in Kuala Lumpur, he began his career in the banking and financial sector as a corporate finance executive at AmInvestment Bank in 1996.

He later joined Crédit Agricole as an investment analyst before rising through the corporate ranks to become a director within a few years.

Tengku Zafrul also served as advisor to the president of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and later held key positions, including chief executive officer (CEO) of CIMB Investment Bank Bhd, group CEO of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd and CEO of CIMB Bank Bhd.

A member of PKR's Ampang division, he is also the president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for the 2025-2029 term. - BERNAMA
