SHAH ALAM - The discovery of a 29-year-old trainee doctor dead in a hospital dormitory in Kuala Krai has prompted a police investigation, a health department probe and calls from medical groups to avoid speculation.

Authorities have classified the case as a sudden death while multiple agencies examine possible factors behind the tragedy.

The discovery at Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra

The incident came to light on March 6, when hospital authorities reported that a female house officer had been found lifeless in a hostel room at Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra (HSIP) in Kuala Krai, Kelantan.

Kuala Krai district police chief Superintendent Mazlan Mamat said the police were informed of the situation at 9.55am.

“Preliminary investigations found that the incident occurred in one of the hostel rooms at HSIP Kuala Krai and the victim was discovered already lifeless. Initial checks at the scene found no elements of crime,” he said in a statement.

Police personnel from the district Criminal Investigation Department and the Kuala Krai police station were dispatched to the location to conduct further checks.

The body was later sent to the hospital’s forensic unit for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Health department launches internal investigation

Following the incident, the Kelantan Health Department established a special committee to look into the circumstances surrounding the trainee doctor’s death. Its director Azman Yacob said the panel would carry out a comprehensive review.

“We are saddened by the incident and I visited her family this morning. The deceased was a graduate from Mansoura University in Egypt and was undergoing her practical training,” he said.

According to Azman, the committee will conduct a holistic investigation, examining several aspects including the cause of the incident, workplace stress and other potential contributing factors.

He also appealed to the public to refrain from speculation that could cause further distress to the family.

Police expand probe and record witness statements

Investigations have continued in the days following the discovery.

On March 9, Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat confirmed that officers had already recorded statements from 10 individuals. Those interviewed include the victim’s relatives, colleagues and lecturers.

“An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of death,” he said.

Yusoff also urged the public not to spread rumours or speculation that could interfere with the investigation.

Medical community urges responsible reporting

The case has also prompted a response from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), which called for restraint in how the incident is discussed publicly.

Its president Thirunavukarasu Rajoo said the organisation was deeply saddened by the trainee doctor’s passing.

“The MMA is deeply saddened by the passing of a 29-year-old trainee doctor and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

“We are concerned about the sharing of content related to this incident and strongly remind all media organisations and social media users to adhere to the national Suicide Content Guidelines when reporting or sharing suicide-related content,” he mentioned.

Dr Thirunavukarasu emphasised the importance of sensitivity and respect for the family during the investigation.

He added that irresponsible sharing of details could harm vulnerable individuals and deepen the trauma experienced by those close to the victim.

“If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek help and do not suffer in silence.

"Support is also available through MMA HelpDoc (for the medical community), Befrienders Malaysia at 03-7627 2929 and Talian Kasih at 15999," he said.

Key aspects being examined include:

  • The medical cause of death
  • Circumstances surrounding the incident at the hostel
  • Workplace conditions and stress factors
  • Statements from individuals connected to the victim

Officials have emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and that conclusions should not be drawn prematurely.
