Elderly woman, grandniece killed in road accident while on school run

ALOR SETAR - An elderly woman and her three-year-old grandniece were killed while on their way to send the child's older brother to school along Jalan Padang Sanai, near Kampung Padang Nyior, close to Padang Terap today.

Padang Terap district deputy police chief DSP Affzanisham Mohammad Sham said that in the incident at 6.45 am, Che Ramlah Abdul Karim, 76, and her grandniece, Auni Afiqah Hadi, died at the scene of the accident due to severe injuries.

Meanwhile, the child's brother, Abdul Hafiz Hadi, 9, a student at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Padang Terap, was injured.

"Police received a call regarding an accident at 6.55 am involving a Toyota Avanza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a motorcycle. Preliminary investigations found that the incident occurred while the driver of the MPV was heading from Kampung Lubuk Labi towards Ladang Seraya, Padang Sanai.

"Upon arriving at the scene, the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction was believed to have been overtaking another car in front before entering the opposite lane and colliding with the MPV," he said in a statement today.

He said that as a result of the accident, the motorcycle rider and co-rider were pronounced dead at the scene, while the pillion rider, who suffered injuries, was taken to the Kuala Nerang Hospital for further treatment.

"The bodies of both victims have been taken to the Forensic Department, Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB), here for the post-mortem process. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (RTA) 1987," he added. - BERNAMA
