SHAH ALAM – A marriage in Kota Malang, East Java, has drawn widespread public attention after it reportedly lasted only a day following a shocking revelation involving one of the parties.

According to Indonesian news portal Kompas.com, the case involves a woman identified as Intan Anggraeni, 28, who claimed she had married an individual known as Yupi Rere, also called Rey.

According to Intan, she felt deceived after discovering that the person she married was, in fact, a woman and not the man she believed him to be prior to the union.

The marriage was said to have taken place on April 8, but ended within 24 hours after the truth came to light.

Intan lodged a report accusing Rey of identity forgery and the use of false documents in the marriage.

Rey, meanwhile, lodged a counter-report, alleging defamation.

Rey said the issue only came to light after their wedding video went viral on social media on the same day. She also claimed to have attempted to resolve the matter amicably by visiting Intan’s home, but the effort was unsuccessful.

However, Rey denied allegations of deception, insisting that Intan had been aware of her true identity from the beginning of their acquaintance.

According to Rey, they began their relationship in February after meeting at a café in Kota Batu, and it later developed further.

“From the beginning, she knew my identity and so did her family,” Rey claimed.

It was reported that Rey also said the relationship deepened after Intan shared traumatic experiences from a previous relationship, adding that she had only intended to offer support without ulterior motives.

She further claimed that the proposal to marry did not originate solely from her and alleged that she had attempted to end the relationship but was met with threats of self-harm.

In addition, Rey said she had provided financial assistance to Intan, including helping to settle several debts amounting to around 200 million rupiah (approximately RM46,390).

She claimed the conflict began after she stopped providing financial aid for several days.

Meanwhile, police said the case remains under preliminary investigation, with no further action taken so far, including issuing official summons to either party.

The incident has sparked public debate over issues of identity as well as the legal implications surrounding same-sex relationships in Indonesia.
