SHAH ALAM - A former model with long-standing ties to elite social circles and a history of personal and political connections has found herself at the centre of a controversy that prompted an unusually direct public denial from US First Lady Melania Trump.
The controversy involves Amanda Ungaro, a Brazilian who previously had a relationship with Paolo Zampolli, an associate of US President Donald Trump.
After spending nearly half her life in the United States, Ungaro was deported last October and reportedly spent three months in a detention center before being expelled from the country, part of broader enforcement actions linked to immigration crackdowns under the Trump administration and its expanded deportation policy.
Ungaro’s deportation has also been linked in reports to a custody dispute with Zampolli over their son, adding a deeply personal dimension to what has become a highly public and politically charged dispute.
On April 8, Ungaro posted a series of messages on X in which she threatened to reveal alleged secrets involving Melania and Donald Trump.
She claimed long-standing personal familiarity with the couple and issued direct warnings.
“I will tear down your corrupt system, even if it's the last thing I do in my life. I will go all the way and I am not afraid.
“Maybe you should be afraid of what I know. Of who you are, and who your husband is,” she said.
The posts, which referenced long-standing personal ties and made explosive allegations, quickly drew attention online and fueled speculation about Melania’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.
On April 9, Melania issued a public denial of any claims linking her to Epstein, telling reporters at the White House that such allegations “need to end today.”
While she did not explicitly reference Ungaro, the unusually direct response has drawn attention not only for its content but also for its timing, coming just one day after Ungaro’s posts began circulating widely.
The sequence of events has fueled speculation about the nature of Ungaro’s past relationship with Melania, particularly given her claims of a 20-year friendship and references to personal interactions involving the Trump family.
