KOTA KINABALU - Six relief centres (PPS) have been activated, sheltering 248 people from 219 families affected by the devastating fire in Sandakan as of 8 am today.

The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the victims are being accommodated at the PPS at the Batu Sapi People’s Housing Project Hall, Sekolah Kebangsaan Gas Hall, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Bahagia Hall, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Sapi Hall, Sibuga Hall and Sekolah Kebangsaan Karamunting.

It said the total number of victims is still being updated, as registration at several evacuation centres remains ongoing.

Yesterday, a massive fire swept through the Kampung Bahagia floating village, destroying an estimated 1,000 houses.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung said the blaze affected an area spanning more than four hectares. - BERNAMA
