Sanusi takes on film role, plays warrior commander

SUNGAI PETANI – Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor drew attention after making a special appearance as an actor in the film The Keris, which is expected to be released in July.

He said his debut in the film industry would open up a new avenue to deliver positive messages to younger generations through film.

Sanusi said he took on the role of a commander who motivates a group of pesilat (silat practitioners) in a fight scene, highlighting elements of Malay heroism.

“My role is as a commander who encourages the pesilat, including one who is set to face a foreign champion.”

“The spirit of Hang Tuah’s heroism is portrayed in The Keris. My role is to bring that spirit to the young people involved in silat,” he said.

He said this when met after the launch of the poster, teaser and trailer for the film in Sungai Petani on Sunday afternoon.

Muhammad Sanusi admitted that acting was not easy as it required deep understanding of the character, but described it as an interesting new experience.

“Acting is difficult because you need to fully understand the script and character. I am a real-life person, but it wasn't too awkward for me to act,” he said.

He explained that he accepted the acting offer because he was drawn to the message being conveyed, particularly regarding Malay culture and the art of silat.

He said the film industry can play a major role in delivering positive messages as well as introducing cultural heritage to younger generations.

“I accepted it because it is related to Malay culture. If it were another role, I might not take it, but this is connected to Malay warriors. I also did not take any payment—it was free,” he said.

“Many influences come from films, including negative ones. So we use the same medium to bring positive messages and our culture to future generations,” he added.

He also did not rule out the possibility of accepting more acting offers in the future if the roles suit him.
