Elderly farmer charged with murder of three individuals

KOTA TINGGI - A farmer was brought to the Magistrate's Court here today on charges of murdering three individuals last week.
The accused, Lim Lian, 71, only nodded when the charge was read out in Mandarin before Magistrate Nur Khalida Farhana Abu Bakar.
No plea was recorded from the accused as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge sheet, Lim is charged with murdering Vietnamese woman Tra Thi Rang, 37, and two locals, Wong Poh Soon, 61, and Chien Kwa Hai, 64, at a restaurant in Jalan Delima, Taman Kota Jaya, at about 1.30 pm, April 19.
The man was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 40 years and if not sentenced to death, shall be punished with whipping of not less than 12 strokes, if convicted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Eizlan Azhar requested a mention date within two weeks to enable his party to obtain permission for the case to be transferred to the High Court.
No bail was offered as the case is under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
The accused was represented by lawyer Belinda Low.
The court then set May 13 for mention of the case.
On April 19, Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said in a statement that two local men and a foreign woman were found dead after being shot at a restaurant in Kota Tinggi.
He said his party received information about the incident at 1.30 pm, April 19 and all the victims, aged between 37 and 63, were believed to have been shot using a shotgun and were confirmed dead at the scene.
Ab Rahaman said the accused had a valid firearms licence for the purpose of protecting the farm from crop pests. - BERNAMA
