SHAH ALAM — For centuries, the flickering shadows of Wayang Kulit have been cast largely by men. But on May 17, 2026, the National Art Gallery will host a transformative event that brings the feminine perspective to the forefront of this ancient art form - the Wayang Wanita Forum: Performance, Dialogue, and Research on Women in Wayang Kulit.

Supported by ArtsFAS (Yayasan Hasanah), this full-day forum is a cornerstone of the larger ArtFAS 2026 season. It offers a rare space for performers, researchers and the curious public to explore how women are not just participating in tradition, but actively reimagining it.

The forum features a powerhouse lineup of practitioners from Malaysia and Indonesia. Highlights include:

* Special Talk: Dr Latifa Ramonita presents "Ruwatan, Sacred Mediation, and the Calling of a Female Dalang," exploring the spiritual and social role of women in the craft.

"Dalang Kembar" (Twin Dalangs) Seruni Widawati and Seruni Widaningrum

* Performance Lectures: Witness the artistry of Nyi Sri Harti Kenik Asmorowati and the unique "Dalang Kembar" (Twin Dalangs) Seruni Widawati and Seruni Widaningrum, who will demonstrate Wayang Wahyu from the Catholic tradition.

* Panel Discussions: Topics will range from the evolution of storytelling to the contemporary reality of female practitioners in Kelantan.

While the morning is dedicated to high-level discourse and live demonstrations, the event invites attendees to get their hands dirty. Among the day’s "All-Day Experiences" include an Artist & Book Fair featuring cultural items and coffee, and a dedicated Puppet-Making Workshop.
