KLANG - A 75-year-old man pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of reckless driving that caused the deaths of two sisters, last Wednesday.

Ang Kim Lai made the plea after the charge was read to him in Mandarin before Magistrate A. Khartiyayini.

According to the charge, Ang, a private sector retiree, who was driving a sport utility vehicle (SUV), was accused of driving recklessly and causing the deaths of Wong Nyok Sim, 62, and Wong Nyoke Fong, 57, at Jalan Pekan Baru here at 7.30 pm on May 15.

The charge was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail sentence of between five and 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000, as well as licence suspension, upon conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nur Nadia Syuhada Rosli proposed bail of RM15,000 in one surety, taking into account the seriousness of the offence.

However, lawyer Tong Kuan Ling, who represented the accused, appealed for minimal bail on the grounds that the father of five suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes, which require follow-up treatment.

The court then allowed the accused bail of RM10,000 in one surety and ordered his driving licence suspended until the disposal of the case. Aug 4 was fixed for mention.

In the incident, a 17-year-old teenager, who is the son of one of the victims, also sustained injuries.

Previously, the media reported that in the incident on the night of May 15, the two local women, aged 57 and 62, died at the scene after being hit by an SUV.

The SUV driver was reported to have fled immediately after the accident before being arrested by police at his eatery the following day. - BERNAMA
