SHAH ALAM — The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting today to decide the dates for nomination and polling for the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, with a press conference expected to follow immediately afterwards.

The meeting, confirmed via a note to editors issued by the EC, is scheduled for 10am.

Political insiders told Sinar Daily that EC is considering July 4 as the earliest possible polling date for both states.

It remains unclear when nomination day will be held, although June 20 has been floated as a possible date, which would ultimately determine the length of the campaign period.

The Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections are expected to be held simultaneously, while Melaka, whose legislative assembly term runs until the end of the year, is understood to be heading to the polls separately, possibly as early as September.

The Johor State Legislative Assembly, which has 56 seats, was dissolved on June 1, while the 36-seat Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly followed suit last Friday.

However, the dissolution of the Negeri Sembilan assembly has not been without controversy.
