SHAH ALAM - Six former Umno leaders are among the 21,858 new members who have been confirmed to have rejoined the party through the Rumah Bangsa initiative.

They are former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar; former Selangor Umno chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar; former Kelantan Umno chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed; former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein; veteran leader and former Foreign Minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar and Datuk Mokhtar Samad.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the figure was recorded since online registration was opened on April 20.

"In a period of less than two months, the registration of new members and the return of former Umno leaders and party members, including leaders from Bersatu throughout Malaysia, has reached 21,858.

"May Allah bless and bestow His mercy upon this Rumah Bangsa, which has contributed greatly in shaping and upholding religion, race and the nation throughout eight decades of struggle," he said in a Facebook post on Friday.

Rumah Bangsa is an Umno reunification initiative introduced by its president, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, aimed at uniting the Malay community and welcoming former members back into the party.
