GURUN - Two soldiers were killed after reportedly being struck by a bomb while undergoing training at the firing range of Kem Hobart in Gurun, in an incident on Tuesday.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan confirmed that police received initial information about the incident at around 12.30pm.

According to a Malaysian Army (TDM) statement, the two victims have been identified as Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar and Private Siti Khadijah Sungip.

The victims, who were brought to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani, have since been transferred to the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem proceedings.

Further details on the incident remain under investigation, he said.

Records show that two previous bomb tragedies have occurred at the same location during military training exercises.

In the first incident on July 9, 1987, nine soldiers from the 24th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment were killed. Investigations found the accident was caused by negligence on the part of a soldier who failed to comply with established procedures while handling an unexploded bomb.

The second incident on July 13, 1988, claimed the life of one soldier from the 10th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.

The accident was not attributed to negligence or human error but was caused by an old buried bomb that detonated while soldiers were waiting their turn for jungle lane shooting training.
