PADANG SERAI - Students from underprivileged backgrounds who have received offers to further their studies at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) may register without having to pay their registration fees upfront.

UiTM Kedah branch rector, Associate Professor Dr Mahazir Ismail, said they would be given flexibility and have until mid-December this year to settle their tuition fees.

"Concerning fees, students need not worry. They should register first. Those who are unable to pay immediately can do so later, as the payment deadline is mid-December.

"We have various forms of assistance available, including zakat aid, which can be arranged to help students from less privileged backgrounds,” he told reporters after the Ziarah Kasih 2.0 programme at Taman Serai Wangi near here today.

He said UiTM places great importance on education, particularly for Bumiputera students, to ensure they have the opportunity to pursue higher levels of education.

"That is why I always tell students who receive an offer to enrol first and start their studies. Any fee-related matters can be settled later," Mahazir said.

Meanwhile, he said more than 400 new students are expected to enrol in the upcoming intake, and the UiTM Kedah branch has also extended early assistance to 10 students from underprivileged families.

"Through this Ziarah Kasih programme, we visit the families of students in the B40 income group and provide assistance to them.

"We hope this aid will, to some extent, help ease their financial burden in preparing for their children's admission to university," he said. - BERNAMA
