Fourteen straight fights, 42 multi-cornered seats as Johor polls near

SHAH ALAM - Johor's state election on July 11 will be contested across a fragmented political landscape, featuring fourteen straight fights, twenty-eight three-cornered contests, eleven four-cornered battles and three five-cornered battles across all 56 seats.
As of the end of the nomination stage today, the structure already signals a highly competitive race, with multi-cornered contests dominating the electoral map.
Both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) are fielding candidates in all 56 seats, setting up the broadest two-way baseline across the state.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) is contesting 33 seats, with Bersatu and Pas dividing the bulk of that slate and Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP) and Pejuang taking up a handful each.
Parti Bersama Malaysia is contesting fifteen seats, largely in the urban Johor Bahru belt, while Muda has fielded candidates in four seats.
Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and Asli are each contesting a single seat and five seats also have independent candidates in the mix.
The fourteen straight fights, mostly PH-versus-BN match-ups in seats such as Buloh Kasap, Bekok, Tangkak and Yong Peng, will serve as the clearest head-to-head battles, offering direct comparisons between the main political blocs without the influence of vote-splitting.
The bulk of the contest lies in the twenty-eight three-cornered races, where overlapping competition between major parties is expected to shape outcomes.
These seats are likely to hinge on how votes are divided among the competing camps rather than on clear majority support.
The eleven four-cornered contests add another layer of complexity, while the three five-cornered battles, in Tenang, Bukit Naning and Paloh, see independents or smaller parties potentially acting as spoilers by drawing away crucial votes in tightly contested constituencies.
Together, 42 of the 56 seats are multi-cornered contests, highlighting a fragmented electoral environment where pluralities may be enough to secure victory in several areas.
Overall, the Johor election is defined by crowded fields and divided contests, where success will depend not only on winning support but also on how effectively opponents split or consolidate the vote.
