CASTELLON - Hundreds of people were evacuated as a wildfire spread in Spain’s eastern Castellon province during the country’s second heat wave of the summer, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

The blaze broke out near Soneja and forced the evacuation of around 500 residents from nearby Azuebar as flames moved closer to populated areas, regional authorities said.

Around 200 emergency personnel and 15 aircraft were deployed to fight the fire, while Spain’s Military Emergency Unit joined the operation with 50 soldiers and 17 vehicles, officials said.

The fire comes as Spain faces several small and medium-sized wildfires in regions including Catalonia, Aragon, Asturias, Andalusia and Galicia.

Civil Protection authorities also kept some natural park areas in Girona and Lleida closed to the public because of the high fire risk, as temperatures in parts of the country rose above 42C. The heat wave is expected to end on July 10, according to Spanish weather forecasts. - BERNAMA
