SHAH ALAM - England midfielder Jordan Henderson has undergone successful wrist surgery after suffering a freak injury during post-match celebrations following the Three Lions' 3-2 World Cup Round of 16 victory over Mexico.
The 36-year-old shared the update on his Instagram account on Wednesday, posting a photograph from his hospital bed after the operation.
"Surgery done! Now let's get ready for the big one Saturday. Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation," Henderson wrote in the caption.
The veteran midfielder sustained the injury moments after England secured their place in the World Cup quarter-finals. Although he remained an unused substitute throughout the match, Henderson was still one of the game's talking points after receiving a yellow card for dissent from the sidelines before later injuring his wrist during the post-match celebrations.
As England's players made their way towards supporters after the final whistle, Henderson appeared to fall awkwardly over an advertising board while climbing to celebrate with fans.
Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to attend to the former England captain, administering oxygen before carrying him off on a stretcher. The incident briefly halted England's celebrations as concerned teammates looked on.
England manager Thomas Tuchel later confirmed Henderson had suffered a serious wrist injury and had been taken to hospital for treatment.
Despite the successful surgery posting, it remains unclear whether Henderson will be fit enough to feature when England face Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.
The experienced midfielder has played only six minutes during this year's tournament but remains one of the senior figures in Tuchel's squad, providing leadership and experience despite his limited time on the pitch.
England booked their place in the last eight after overcoming Mexico in an eventful contest.
Jude Bellingham starred with a first-half brace to earn the Player of the Match award, while Harry Kane added England's third goal from the penalty spot.
Mexico responded through Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, but England held on despite playing much of the second half with 10 men following Jarell Quansah's dismissal.
England will now meet Norway for a place in the semi-finals, with Tuchel expected to provide a further update on Henderson's availability ahead of the quarter-final.
