Hot-dip galvanising Forum brings industry players together to strengthen Malaysia's infrastructure sector

SHAH ALAM – The Galvanizers Association of Malaysia (GAM) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the country's hot-dip galvanising (HDG) industry, gathering industry players, engineers and academics at its inaugural HDG Forum.
Organised with the support of the International Zinc Association, the forum attracted around 270 delegates, including manufacturers, engineers, consultants, fabricators, academics and students.
The event served as a platform to promote greater awareness of corrosion protection, facilitate technical knowledge sharing and strengthen collaboration across Malaysia's steel and construction industries.

Beyond highlighting the technical benefits of HDG, the forum also focused on promoting sustainable infrastructure by encouraging wider adoption of durable, long-lasting and cost-effective steel protection solutions that help extend the life cycle of infrastructure assets.

Established in 1997, GAM serves as the national association representing Malaysia's HDG industry, providing technical support, industry standards, professional training and networking opportunities to encourage the wider adoption of galvanised steel in construction and infrastructure projects.
The association is currently led by chairman Ahmad Latif, deputy chairman Guljar Singh and secretary Nargis Banu Kamal, representing manufacturers, suppliers and zinc producers across the country.
Malaysia is home to more than 25 HDG companies with a combined annual production capacity of between 700,000 and 850,000 metric tonnes, providing sufficient capacity to support the country's growing domestic market while meeting demand from the construction and infrastructure sectors.

GAM is also an active member of the Asia Pacific General Galvanizers Association (APGGA), reinforcing regional cooperation and knowledge sharing.
In 2024, Nargis made history as the first woman to be appointed president of the regional body, marking a significant milestone for both Malaysia and the industry.
Despite challenges including rising zinc prices, currency fluctuations and increasing transportation costs, Malaysia's HDG sector has remained resilient since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Looking ahead, GAM said it will continue strengthening technical excellence, fostering closer collaboration among industry stakeholders and promoting wider adoption of HDG through knowledge sharing to support the sustainable growth and long-term competitiveness of Malaysia's HDG industry.
