SHAH ALAM - Forget just casting a ballot – for many Johor voters, the real symbol of civic duty came in the form of a purple-stained index finger.

As voters headed to polling centres for the Johor state election, social media timelines were flooded with photos of inked fingers, with many proudly showing off their “proof” that they had fulfilled their responsibility at the ballot box.

But Malaysians being Malaysians, even the amount of ink became a topic of amusement.

Some voters showed off fingers covered in deep purple ink, with the stain stretching across almost the entire index finger. Their dramatic ink marks drew jokes that they must have been among the first voters of the day, arriving while the ink bottle was still full and generous.

Others, however, were left with only a faint purple smudge, leading to playful comments that they must have arrived when the ink bottle was running low and had to make do with whatever was left.

The different levels of ink coverage quickly became a source of online entertainment, with voters comparing their “ink achievements” and sharing their own photos across Threads, Instagram and X.

Some users even questioned why those with heavily stained fingers did not simply dip their whole finger or hand, while others responded by sharing their own inked fingers – some proudly displaying full purple coverage, while others showed only a barely visible mark.

On Threads, one user jokingly commented: “Leave some ink for the people behind you, bro,” after seeing a voter’s heavily stained finger.

Another user reacted to a voter with an almost fully purple finger, asking: “Aiyoh, the ink covered the whole finger! Was the officer in a bad mood?”

Meanwhile, one user joked about another voter’s deep purple stain: “You were really enthusiastic. Luckily you did not dip your entire palm as well.”

From almost fully purple fingers to barely noticeable smudges, the ink stains became an unexpected highlight of election day, proving that even a small mark on a finger could spark laughter and connect voters online.
