JAKARTA  - A workplace rivalry is believed to have turned deadly after a man and his two-year-old son were killed in an attack at their home in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

In the incident on Sunday night, Jamil, 30, and his son, Riski, 2, died after they were allegedly attacked by a man identified as 33-year-old Aan Kurniawan.

The victim's wife, Nur Hanisa, 23, survived the attack despite suffering injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Bhayangkara Hospital in Palu.

The suspect is believed to have been Jamil's co-worker at a poultry slaughterhouse on Jalan PDAM in Duyu Village, West Palu district.

According to the victim's neighbour, Bahtiar, tensions between Jamil and the suspect had reportedly been ongoing due to workplace rivalry.

He said the pair had frequently clashed and lodged complaints against each other with their employer.

"The main motive is believed to be revenge. However, the exact trigger behind the suspect's actions has yet to be established," he said.

Meanwhile, Nur Hanisa said she woke up on the night of the attack to use the bathroom before spotting the suspect outside the house holding two knives.

She asked why he was there, but the man allegedly ordered her to remain silent.

Fearing for her safety, Nur Hanisa tried to flee to a room and lock the door, but the suspect allegedly forced his way in and attacked her.

Despite her injuries, she managed to gather enough strength to call for help after failing to find her mobile phone to contact her family.

Her screams were heard by neighbours, who broke down the front door before rushing her to hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Palu Police Criminal Investigation chief AKP Ismailboby said the suspect was not related to the victims.

He said police were continuing their investigation while efforts to locate the suspect were ongoing.

"Based on information provided by the employer, the victim and the suspect were not related," he said.

Central Sulawesi Governor Anwar Hafid also urged authorities to expedite efforts to arrest the suspect and complete the investigation.

He described the incident as a brutal crime.
