KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's willingness to apologise publicly following his use of a term that offended the Indian community reflects courageous, responsible and sincere leadership that places truth above all else, in line with the Malaysia MADANI vision.

Political analyst and media consultant Datuk Anbumani Balan said not every leader is willing to admit mistakes, let alone repeat a public apology to ensure the message of remorse truly reaches the affected community.

"He apologised twice in front of the Indian community, not merely through a media statement. He first did so at a Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA) programme at UniversitI Malaya, and again yesterday in Seremban.

"It is very rare to see such a situation because he did not point fingers at anyone. The Prime Minister's message was profound, and he wants to move forward to help safeguard the interests of the Indian community in this country," he said in a statement today.

He said a leader's sincerity is measured not only by words but also by the willingness to admit mistakes, listen to the people's concerns and take steps to rectify the situation.

According to Anbumani, Anwar understands the concerns of the Indian community in Malaysia and has urged them to assess the MADANI Government's commitment based on its track record rather than allowing a single incident, which has already been explained and followed by an apology, to influence their judgement.

He said that since the formation of the MADANI Government, various initiatives have been implemented to empower the Indian community, including strengthening the role of MITRA, providing assistance to entrepreneurs, developing educational institutions, supporting places of worship and introducing socio-economic programmes.

He added that the Prime Minister's commitment to personally monitor and directly coordinate issues concerning the community represents a bold and significant step towards strengthening the government's service delivery system.

"With oversight at the highest level, the implementation of policies and initiatives related to the Indian community is expected to become more efficient, transparent and focused, ensuring that the intended benefits reach the target groups," he said.

Meanwhile, Anbumani also urged all parties to uphold the spirit of unity and strengthen racial harmony to ensure Malaysia remains peaceful, stable and inclusive. - BERNAMA
