SHAH ALAM – Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is set to retain the Rantau state seat in the Negeri Sembilan state election after taking a commanding lead over Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Azizul Hakim Mahdi.
As of 7.35pm, Mohamad, who is also the incumbent Rantau assemblyman, secured 3,423 votes compared with Azizul’s 949 votes, giving BN a majority lead of 2,474 votes.
Mohamad previously retained the Rantau seat in the 2023 Negeri Sembilan state election after receiving 16,957 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Rozmal Malakan, who garnered 6,677 votes.
He won the seat with a majority of 10,280 votes in the previous state election.
Rantau has long been considered a BN stronghold, with Mohamad first winning the seat in the 2004 state election and continuing to represent the constituency, except for the 2018 general election when he lost the seat following a legal challenge that led to a by-election.
In the 2019 Rantau by-election, Mohamad reclaimed the seat after defeating three other candidates, including PH’s Dr S Streram.
