WASHINGTON - The United States (US) based news outlet The Intercept and nonprofit organisation Freedom of the Press Foundation have filed a lawsuit challenging the sale of premium access to US President Donald Trump's posts on Truth Social, according to a court document obtained on Wednesday.

On July 17, Financial Times reported that the company, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), plans to charge US$100,000 per month for a subscription that would allow high-profile investors and traders to receive posts from the Truth Social platform milliseconds before anyone else.

The service was launched in August.

"Plaintiffs respectfully request that this Court: declare that defendants' practice of posting official government information exclusively on Truth Social, which maintains a paid API for such official government information, is unconstitutional and unlawful,” the complaint, filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, said.

The lawsuit also seeks an injunction preventing the exclusive publication of official government information on the platform.

Truth Social was created by TMTG in 2022 following the suspension and restrictions imposed on Trump by major social media companies after the 2021 Capitol riot. - BERNAMA
