ATHENS - A man is alleged to have travelled from Cyprus to Albania for a football match, leaving his 11-year-old daughter at home alone for two days, German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing Cypriot media.

Authorities are investigating the incident on suspicion of child neglect, Cyprus's largest newspaper Fileleftheros reported on Friday.

The police were alerted by neighbours on Thursday evening. The girl had apparently been alone in the flat since the morning.

Police officers found the 11-year-old at home. She confirmed that her father had set off on a trip the previous day.

The single father travelled to watch the football match between Dinamo Tirana and Pafos FC in Albania on Thursday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The police called in social services, who took charge of the girl's care and protection, according to reports in the Cypriot media.

The father was due to be arrested upon his return. He is under investigation on suspicion of having abandoned his underage daughter and thereby exposing her to danger. - BERNAMA
