OGUN – A 101-year-old great-grandmother has been arrested in southwestern Nigeria for allegedly selling cannabis to residents in her local community.

The woman, identified as Esther Ogunmabo, was arrested on Saturday, according to Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), as reported by the BBC.

NDLEA Media Director Femi Babafemi said Ogunmabo was found with about 90 grammes of ‘skunk’ cannabis, which she allegedly repackaged into smaller quantities for sale to local residents.

According to Babafemi, Ogunmabo told authorities that she turned to selling the illegal substance after her general-goods shop was destroyed in a fire.

"She claimed to have sold the substance to local residents," he said.

The NDLEA alleged that one of Ogunmabo’s daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplied her with cannabis every four days.

The drugs were then allegedly divided into smaller quantities and sold to customers within the community.

Despite the allegations, NDLEA Chief Executive Mohamed Marwa ordered that Ogunmabo be released on bail and receive counselling, taking into account her advanced age.

The agency said her release on bail did not exempt her from possible legal action, with the 101-year-old still liable to face charges relating to the alleged offences.

Her daughter was also detained to assist with the investigation.
