K-PHENOMENON: HOW KOREA CAPTIVATED THE WORLD is bringing veteran Korean television producer and global content expert Dr Kenny Bae Kihyung to Malaysia for a special three-hour masterclass on Sept 25.

With more than three decades of experience in television, broadcasting, international co-productions and global content, Dr Kenny has seen first-hand how Korean content developed from local productions into a global phenomenon.

During his career with Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), he worked on documentaries, entertainment, international relations and global co-productions. He has also worked with the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in Kuala Lumpur and conducted masterclasses internationally.

So, if you are someone who can spend hours talking about your favourite K-drama, knows your K-pop groups by heart, loves Korean films or simply wants to understand why Korean content is so successful, this is a chance to look at the K-phenomenon from a completely different perspective.

The masterclass will explore:

  • Why Korean content connects with audiences around the world
  • How Korean culture became part of the global mainstream
  • Why keeping stories local can actually make them more appealing globally
  • How K-dramas, K-pop and other content build loyal fans and communities
  • How Korean creators develop stories and intellectual property for global audiences
  • What Malaysia can learn from Korea's success
  • How Malaysian stories could reach audiences beyond our borders

And there is more.

Participants will also get to take part in an interactive exercise called “From Local Story to Global Pitch.”

Bring along a Malaysian story, character, idea or cultural experience and explore how it could be developed and presented to a wider international audience - without losing what makes it Malaysian.

You do not need to be a producer or filmmaker to enjoy the session.

Whether you are a K-pop fan, K-drama lover, writer, filmmaker, content creator, novelist, publisher, student or simply curious about Korea's global success, there is something to take away.

The three-hour session will include a presentation, case studies, interactive exercise and Q&A, and will be conducted entirely in English.

Come for the K-phenomenon. Stay to discover what Malaysia could do with its own stories. Seats are limited so register now: https://festivalnovelmalaysia.onpay.my
