SHAH ALAM - Sixteen-year-old Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal went to school for an extra class on Saturday. Hours later, she was found dead inside the school hall in Yong Peng, Johor with severe injuries.

Three schoolmates have been detained in connection with Irene's death. What happened inside the school remains unclear.

As police investigate the case as murder, these are the key facts known so far.

What happened on Oct 3?

Irene, a Form Four student, was at school on Saturday for extra classes, which were reportedly due to end at around 5pm.

Her friend who wanted to be known as Rina, 16, said she tried calling Irene three times but got no answer.

She then went to Irene's grandmother's house to check whether she had already returned home.

When she found out Irene has not come home, Rina went back to the school and asked other friends to help her search.

The group noticed that the school hall door, which is normally kept shut, was open. At about 5.50pm, they found Irene unconscious and covered in blood.

It was reported that Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said she had suffered multiple injuries to her head and body.

"An autopsy was conducted today at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat.

"The victim sustained several injuries to her head and body and was pronounced dead at the scene," he said.

Who were arrested?

Police have arrested three male students, all aged 16, in connection with the case.

All three are understood to be students from the same school as Irene. One of the suspects was brought before the Batu Pahat magistrate's court on Sunday.

The court granted a six-day remand order until Oct 9 to allow police to continue their investigation.

Ab Rahaman said the suspect had no previous criminal record.

Police also seized a mobile phone, a set of clothing and a pair of slippers from the suspect.

The suspects remain under investigation and police have yet to publicly establish the precise role of each individual, if any, in Irene's death.

What was the motive?

This remains a key unanswered question.

Police said the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be established.

At this stage, there has been no official confirmation that the killing was linked to bullying, a personal dispute, a relationship or any other specific reason.

For now, the confirmed position is that police are investigating the death as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Who was Irene Sofiya?

Irene was remembered as a bright and hardworking student with ambitions of becoming a doctor.

She had hoped to follow in the footsteps of her late mother and pursue a career in medicine.

Her family and friends described her as a quiet, high-achieving student who was focused on her studies and future.

Why is school security now under scrutiny?

The case has raised questions about what security measures were in place while students remained at school after normal hours.

The Education Ministry has ordered a comprehensive review of school management and security following Irene's death.

Its minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said the review would cover student attendance during additional classes, security controls and patrols around the school.

The security company appointed by the school has also been asked to cooperate fully.

The ministry said stern action would be taken if negligence or failure to carry out assigned duties is established.
