SOME childhood obsessions grow up with you, others simply wait until you are old enough to have your own money.

For anyone who grew up watching Care Bears, the new Skechers x Care Bears collection falls firmly into the second category. And yes, I got the pink one for myself.

Skechers and Cloudco Entertainment have brought the colourful Care Bears back in a collection of footwear for women, girls and toddlers, combining the characters many of us grew up watching with Skechers' signature comfort technology.

For millennials who remember Care Bears not as a retro aesthetic but as part of childhood television, this is the kind of collaboration that hits differently.

Because these are not just colourful bears. They are our colourful bears. And yes, Funshine Bear is still my favourite.

The yellow Bear of cheerfulness and positivity is among the familiar faces featured across the collection, alongside Cheer Bear, Good Luck Bear, Grumpy Bear and other fan favourites.

Care Bears began with 10 original characters – Tenderheart Bear, Cheer Bear, Funshine Bear, Grumpy Bear, Good Luck Bear, Love-a-Lot Bear, Bedtime Bear, Friend Bear, Wish Bear and Birthday Bear.

Each had a distinct colour and belly badge representing an emotion, personality or value. Today, the franchise has more than 60 characters.

Now, they are on our shoes. Yes, I actually wear mine everywhere.

I picked up the Care Bears Foamies Max Cushioning – Glee, in pink. At first glance, it is exactly what you would expect from a Care Bears collaboration – cute, colourful and unapologetically fun.

But after wearing them, the novelty is not actually the best part. They are genuinely comfortable.

The name Max Cushioning is not just there for decoration. The cushioning gives the shoes a soft, comfortable feel for everyday wear, while the platform sole gives that little bit of extra lift without making the shoes feel overly dressy.

For me, these are very much relax-day shoes. They are the pair I reach for when I am not trying too hard.

I have worn them to my Pilates classes, when meeting friends, going out with the family and, increasingly, just whenever I am heading out and want something easy. They have somehow become one of those pairs that live by the door because I keep reaching for them.

And perhaps the most unexpected part? They make me feel young again. Not “trying to dress young” young but more like the very specific feeling of being a kid who would have been completely obsessed with these shoes – except now I can actually buy them myself.

The Foamies also come with CaliBits charms, giving you the option to personalise the shoes with little Care Bears-themed details.

For someone who grew up with the characters, that tiny extra detail is dangerously effective. You see the little characters and instantly remember which one you liked.

The Skechers x Care Bears collection brings that nostalgia into everyday footwear, combining the characters' colourful graphics and recognisable belly badges with Skechers' comfort-focused designs.

For women, the collection includes the Foamies Surge at RM259 and Foamies Max Cushioning at RM299. The Max Cushioning design features Cheer Bear, Good Luck Bear, Grumpy Bear, Funshine Bear, Share Bear and Sweet Dreams Bear across Care Bears-inspired artwork, with CaliBits charms adding another playful touch.

The Foamies Surge features rainbows, stars, sunshine, clouds and Care Bears characters and is available in lavender, blue and pink.

For younger fans, the collection gets even more playful. The Foamies Swifters for girls, priced at RM199, features a rainbow strap and Care Bears CaliBits, while the sneaker collection includes Hugs N Snugs, Skechers Street UNO Lite and Skechers Twinkle Toes styles.

There are glittery finishes, rhinestone-embellished toe caps, three-dimensional Care Bears graphics and even light-up designs. In other words, the children get the version of Care Bears we would have absolutely lost our minds over as kids.

But perhaps that is exactly the point. Skechers president Michael Greenberg said the collaboration taps into the growing appeal of nostalgia among adults who grew up with the franchise.

“Nostalgia is having its moment – and Care Bears is one of the most coveted childhood memories for millions of adults today,” he said.

The partnership also arrives as Care Bears approaches its 45th anniversary, giving longtime fans a chance to revisit characters they grew up with while introducing them to a new generation.

Cloudco Entertainment head of global licensing Robert Prinzo said Skechers' multi-generational reach made it a natural partner for Care Bears.

The collection starts from RM199 and is available at selected Skechers Concept Stores, including 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Pavilion Bukit Jalil, Pavilion KL, Sunway Pyramid, Suria KLCC Mall and The Exchange TRX Mall, as well as online at Skechers Malaysia.

For those of us who remember watching Care Bears long before “Y2K” became a fashion trend, there is something quite funny about seeing a childhood favourite return as a collectible lifestyle item.

We used to watch them. Now we can wear them. And apparently, I am going to wear mine everywhere.
