SHAH ALAM - ONEcharity Fundraising Dinner raised more than RM500,000 for five Chinese schools in Kuantan, surpassing its initial fundraising target.

Supported by community telco redONE Mobile, the dinner was held at Golden Empire Palace Restaurant on Sept 26, bringing together guests across 108 tables in support of Chinese education.

The proceeds will benefit SJK(C) Semambu, SJK(C) Chung Ching, SJK(C) Kong Min, SMJK Tanah Putih and SM Chong Hwa Kuantan.

The event was organised in collaboration with the East Pahang Chinese Primary Schools Development Committee.

Fundraising efforts included the sale of redONE Mobile exclusive merchandise and lucky draw tickets, as well as a mobile fundraising appeal led by ONEcharity founder and redONE Mobile group chief sales officer Ben Teh, who called on telecommunications operators to contribute to Chinese education.

Teh said fundraising methods must evolve alongside the changing needs of schools and communities.

“ONEcharity is exploring the development of a mobile fundraising platform to make future fundraising for Chinese education easier, more convenient and more accessible. The platform can also serve as a bridge connecting the Malaysian Chinese community, businesses and schools, helping to build a more sustainable support system for Chinese education,” he said.

Teh also expressed his gratitude to the East Pahang Chinese Primary Schools Development Committee, together with the boards of directors, Parent-Teacher Associations, principals, teachers and parents of the participating schools, for their contributions to the dinner’s success.

Established in 2015, ONEcharity has raised more than RM5 million to support 108 Chinese schools across 11 states in Malaysia.

The funds have helped schools upgrade facilities, carry out essential maintenance and improvements, and support educational and school activities that enhance students’ learning environments and experiences.

Meanwhile, redONE Mobile Group chairman and Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia (Huazong) permanent honorary president Tan Sri Dr Goh Tian Chuan said the company remained committed to supporting Chinese education and ensuring that funds raised through ONEcharity reached participating schools in full.

Under its sponsorship arrangement, redONE Mobile covers the main expenses of each ONEcharity Chinese Education Charity Fundraising Dinner, including banquet and venue decoration costs, under a zero-deduction principle.

This allows participating schools to receive the full proceeds from table sales, while additional funds raised during the dinner are distributed equally among them.

Goh said redONE Mobile’s continued contributions over the past decade were intended not only to provide direct support but also to encourage more businesses and community organisations to contribute to Chinese education.

“Chinese education is the root and soul of Malaysian Chinese culture,” he said, calling on businesses and merchants within the Chinese community to continue supporting initiatives that strengthen the future of Chinese education.

He also expressed hope that more businesses and community members would organise fundraising and sponsorship initiatives to ensure Chinese education continued to receive sustained support.

Huazong permanent honorary president Tan Sri Fong Tian Sing, who attended the dinner said the strong support reflected the Malaysian Chinese community’s continued commitment to Chinese education.

He stressed the importance of sustaining Chinese primary and independent secondary education as important pillars of Malaysia’s multicultural education landscape and called for continued support for Chinese schools, including Kuantan Chung Hwa Independent High School, which he said played an important role in nurturing future talent.

Fong also said a multicultural society and a multi-stream education system were fundamental to national unity and opposed extreme statements attempting to close Chinese primary schools or eliminate vernacular schools.

As an important driving force behind the establishment and subsequent development of Kuantan Chung Hwa Independent High School, Fong expressed hope that the school would receive more support to ensure its steady growth and nurture more talent for the Chinese community and the nation.
