Number of flood victims in three states drops further tonight

KUALA LUMPUR - The number of flood victims in three states namely Johor, Melaka and Pahang dropped further tonight to 44,277 from 46,053 people this evening.

In JOHOR, the number of flood victims went down to 43,667 people as of 8 pm tonight after the flood situation in the Kluang district fully recovered and all victims have been allowed to return home.

The State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) in a statement said a total of 12,385 families are still placed at 172 temporary relief centres in five districts affected by the floods.

"Batu Pahat is the most badly affected area with 37,878 victims, followed by Muar (3,104), Tangkak (1,924), Segamat (706) and Mersing (55),” the statement read.

The statement also said the water level in nine rivers has exceeded the dangerous level, among them Sungai Batu Pahat at the Bekok Dam (Batu Pahat) at 19.73 metres (m); Sungai Muar at Bukit Kepong (Muar) at 4.49m and Sungai Senggarang at Senggarang (Batu Pahat) at 3.51m.

The weather is expected to be clear in eight districts tonight, with the exception of Mersing and Kota Tinggi where rain is forecast.

In MELAKA, the number of flood victims in Jasin dropped to 438 from 115 families at 8 pm this evening compared to 442 from 116 families at 2 pm.

The Melaka JBPN secretariat in a statement informed that all victims were relocated to five relief centres, one of them Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Mendapat with 25 victims from seven families.

"A total of 134 victims from 32 families have been placed at SK Parit Penghulu, 57 victims from 22 families at SK Parit Gantong, 167 victims from 42 families at SK Batu Gajah and 55 victims from 12 families at SK Sungai Rambai,” said the statement.

In PAHANG, the JPBN secretariat reported that the total number of flood victims in Rompin continues to record a drop after only 172 victims remain at two relief centres compared to 677 victims at five relief centres this evening.

The relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Aur has 62 victims from 24 families while 110 victims from 37 families are at Sekolah Kebangsaan Leban Chondong. - BERNAMA
