CAKES, picnic mats and children running around with frosting on their fingers set the scene at Cake Piknik: Family Edition at Lumi Tropicana in Petaling Jaya, yesterday.
What began as a simple gathering for cake lovers has grown into a community-driven event, this time designed to bring families closer together.
While adults usually stole the spotlight with their elaborate creations, it was the kids who shone this round, proudly presenting cakes they baked themselves.
Families turned up with homemade cakes, eager to share and swap slices. It was a day of laid-back fun where baking became a way to connect, unwind and spend meaningful time together.
Amalina Jamil of Piknik Ventures, one of the event’s organisers, said the team wanted to create a family-friendly version of Cake Piknik.
“Before this, our picnics were more focused on adults. This time, we wanted it to be more family-oriented because kids enjoy baking too.
“I think we achieved that goal, because many kids brought along cakes they baked themselves. So, we managed to reach our target for families,” she said when met after the event.
Furthermore, she added that the atmosphere was especially satisfying.
“Everyone came with their children and families including mine. It was so fun to see the kids playing. We also had many workshops and vendors, so everything we planned over the past two months has been achieved,” she added.
Grey Cube co-founder Nadia Halina revealed that the next edition, Cake Piknik x CIMB Art & Soul: Artober, will be held on Sept 27 at MITEC, Kuala Lumpur.
“This was our first time organising a family-oriented event. On the 27th, we’ll focus on the art community instead, working with professional bakers who will present cakes as edible art,” she said.
A Community for Families and Foodies
Initially, children under 12 were not allowed due to venue limitations and delicate cake displays. But as mothers themselves, the founders wanted to create a safe, fun space for kids.
This edition placed children and parents at the centre, encouraging them to bake together, share their creations and join kids-only activities.
Highlights included cake-sharing sessions, free workshops, and even a kids’ marketplace where young entrepreneurs ran their own booths.
The Makan Grounds featured 12 food and beverage vendors, the largest lineup so far, alongside contests, lucky draws and door gifts from more than 20 sponsors. The sponsor includes Lumi Marketplace, Kitmens, Lumos Projectors, MyFlavor, Sunway Lagoon, Dejaa Vuu and Iremia Organics.
Cake artists, including some of Malaysia’s top names, showcased edible masterpieces featuring tiered creations, fondant modelling, sugar sculptures, hand-painted details and mirror glaze finishes, transforming the park into a gallery of edible art.
A Slice of Passion
Among participants was Diba Baharuddin, a business owner and full-time account manager, who brought her Lapis Legit Double Chocolate Hazelnut cake.
“A cake picnic is basically a picnic where you serve and eat cakes, your own and others’. I experimented with a new flavour today and I’m glad it turned out well,” she said.
Visitors Noor Saidah Nailah, 29, and Shahrul Khairin, 27, said the event was about more than cakes.
“For us, I think this is one of the best cake picnics ever because we can taste so many different cakes and flavours.
“I think a lot of the vendors also provided plenty of food and it was all very delicious,” Shahrul said.
“At this event, you can bake or buy and bring your own cake. You get to connect with bakers, try their cakes, and explore different flavours. It’s a casual experience, but a really enjoyable one,” Saidah added.
From a Small Idea to a Big Movement
The cake picnic concept, first popularised in the US earlier this year by Elisa Sunga and her team, quickly went viral, inspiring cake lovers worldwide.
In Malaysia, Cake Piknik has evolved from a niche idea into a beloved series of community events, bringing together creativity, connection, and of course — plenty of cake.
The founding team behind Cake Piknik includes Amalina (Jars by AJ), Mae (Bttrswt Empire), and cake enthusiasts Julieann Ragojo and Nadia, who bonded over a shared love for baking, community, and creativity.
