SHAH ALAM - The death of a 22-year-old Universiti Malaya (UM) student who allegedly fell from his residential college today has left the campus community in mourning, with police and university authorities urging the public not to speculate as investigations continue.
Petaling Jaya District Police Chief ACP Shamsudin Mamat confirmed that the student was reported to have fallen from a building at one of UM’s residential colleges and investigation was underway.
“The incident was reported at 3.15pm. A male student, aged 22, fell from a residential college at Universiti Malaya.
"The victim was taken to University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) and pronounced dead at 4.25pm by the attending medical officer,” said Shamsudin.
He said police were still conducting investigations at the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall.
“A post-mortem will be conducted tonight by the PPUM Pathology Department. Any further updates will be communicated once available,” he added.
In a statement, UM expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and extended condolences to the family.
“The entire Universiti Malaya community expresses our deepest sympathy to the family of the late student.
"The university, through the Student Affairs Department, is providing full support and assistance to help the family through this difficult time,” it said.
UM added that the cause of the incident is still under police investigation and the university is giving its full cooperation to the authorities.
The statement also urged the public and media to respect the family’s privacy and avoid spreading unverified information about the case.
“We call on everyone to refrain from making or sharing speculative statements and to respect the family’s privacy.
"UM also urges all members of the campus community to pray for the wellbeing of the deceased and strength for the family,” it said.
Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir confirmed that the Higher Education Ministry (KPT) and UM are providing immediate assistance to the family.
In a Facebook post, he said he personally visited PPUM after learning of the incident.
“For now, we are still waiting for an official statement from the police before KPT releases further details. My deepest condolences to the family of the student,” Zambry said.
