SHAH ALAM – A newly built bridge in China dramatically collapsed after a landslide tore through its structure, just months after it was opened to the public.
The 762-metre-long Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan province crumbled yesterday, sending a massive cloud of dust and debris into the air as horrified onlookers screamed.
A video shared on platform X captured the shocking moment when the hillside gave way, burying the bridge in sand and rubble.
According to The Sun UK, the landslide caused the bridge’s supporting pillars and sections of the structure to collapse, scattering debris deep into a ravine.
Despite the chaos, no casualties were reported.
Authorities quickly shut down the area after cracks appeared along the nearby hillside and roadway, citing safety concerns.
An initial investigation revealed that the cracks likely formed due to water accumulation from a nearby dam.
Emergency crews rushed to the site, and all stranded vehicles were cleared by around 11pm local time, China Daily reported.
The Hongqi Bridge, which connects to Tibet, was launched earlier this year as part of National Highway 317 in Maerkang city.
