SHAH ALAM - Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been urged to convene an urgent Perikatan Nasional (PN) Supreme Council meeting to formalise the leadership transition process in accordance with the coalition’s Constitution, following his announcement to step down as chairman.
Pas Central Committee member Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the meeting should be held as soon as Muhyiddin returns to Malaysia to allow the Supreme Council to approve the resignation and proceed with the appointment of new leadership.
Annuar said under the PN Constitution, Muhyiddin’s resignation has not yet taken effect despite his statement that it would be effective the following day.
“That is a statement of intent. From a regulatory standpoint, it has not yet taken effect because a resignation is subject to Article 8.3(1b) of the PN Constitution.
“That article states ‘if the chairman resigns, the resignation shall take effect only after it has received the approval of the Supreme Council, which shall as soon as possible elect a new chairman’,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
He also referred to Article 7A(1) of the Constitution, which provides for the establishment of a Presidential Council to deliberate major issues involving PN.
“Therefore, it is appropriate for the ‘Presidential Council’ to meet first to reach a consensus on the direction of PN itself.
“All processes stipulated in this Constitution must be complied with,” he said.
On Tuesday, Muhyiddin announced that he would relinquish his position as PN chairman effective Jan 1. This was followed by resignations from state leadership, including Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali as PN Selangor chairman and PN secretary-general.
Similar decisions were taken by three other state PN chairmen, namely Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu in Perak, Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal in Johor and Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker in Negeri Sembilan.
