SHAH ALAM – Selangor Pas Youth has expressed its full and open support for the nomination of Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as the new Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Its chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said the support was based on PN’s urgent need to renew its leadership in line with current political realities and the significant challenges facing the people and the country.
He said Sanusi is seen as the most suitable candidate due to his leadership and administrative track record in Kedah, which has demonstrated his ability to govern effectively.
“He has been bold in defending the rights of the people of Kedah and has consistently voiced the state’s demands, including the issue of raw water royalties, despite facing opposition from various parties, including the Federal Government.
“PN needs a leader who is brave, firm and not merely rhetorical,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
Sukri said that beyond being outspoken, Sanusi also possesses a distinct character that allows him to be accepted by various segments of society, including the youth.
“His strong relationship with the people and the grassroots, especially young people, adds significant value to PN’s image as it prepares to face future political challenges,” he said.
He also stressed that in a political climate filled with pressure, threats and what he described as selective prosecutions, Sanusi has remained steadfast in defending principles and truth despite facing political attacks and negative perceptions.
“PN yearns for an opposition spokesperson who is firm, courageous and consistent in highlighting the government’s weaknesses in the interest of the people, without fear,” he added.
At the same time, Sukri emphasised that the support for Sanusi does not diminish the contributions and services of Muhyiddin during his tenure as PN chairman.
“However, PN cannot continue to be carried away by nostalgia. The coalition needs fresher leadership continuity for the sake of the people and the nation,” he said.
On Tuesday, media reports said Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, officially announced his decision after leading the coalition for five years since its formation.
The former prime minister had led PN since the coalition was officially registered on Aug 7, 2020, playing a key role in shaping its political direction at the national level.
Previously, there had been calls from Pas for the PN chairmanship to be given to the party, including an open appeal by Pas Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.
