SHAH ALAM – Bersatu Deputy President Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has been expelled from the party, according to a letter issued by its disciplinary board.
A notice sighted by Sinar confirmed that the decision was finalised by the board during a meeting on Friday.
Sources indicated that the move against the Larut MP followed a meeting held on Thursday, where it was determined that his actions had violated Clause 9.1.4 of the party’s constitution.
Under the terms of the notice, Hamzah has 14 days to submit an appeal to the Appeals Board for consideration.
In a separate statement, Bersatu Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali informed that the Supreme Leadership Council had been formally notified of the Disciplinary Board’s decision.
“Hamzah has been expelled and his membership rights in the party have been revoked under Clause 22.5, effective Feb 13.
“This follows actions which breached Clause 9.1.4 of the Bersatu Constitution,” Azmin said.
The Opposition leader had previously been summoned to appear before the board to assist in investigations regarding allegations of his involvement in a commotion at the party’s Annual General Assembly, as well as reported attacks against Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The disciplinary proceedings against Hamzah went ahead as scheduled, despite the Opposition leader currently being overseas.
In a related matter, 16 Bersatu MPs have urged Muhyiddin to step down as party president immediately.
The lawmakers expressed their confidence that Hamzah is capable of serving as acting president to restore Bersatu’s agenda, champion national interests and reunify the party to ensure future electoral success.
