BINGE-watchers counting down to the return of Bridgerton now have an additional reason to tune in, as Malaysian representation makes its way into the lavish world of the "Ton" in the upcoming fourth season.
Fans of the Netflix series are celebrating the casting of Malaysian actor Zheng Xi Yong, who portrays Lord Barnaby, marking a rare Southeast Asian presence in the hit Regency-era drama.
Zheng, who hails from Miri, Sarawak, is one of the new faces introduced this season, adding to the expanding social circles of London’s high society.
Zheng has previously appeared in major international productions, including the Barbie movie and is set to feature in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy and Sandokan, further cementing his rising global profile.
The 32-year-old actor shared his excitement on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to join the series.
“Dearest reader, this is now a Posy Li stan account. Absolutely adored my time on @bridgertonnetflix and everyone who I got to meet and work with! What a dream to be part of it all #bridgerton,” he wrote.
Bridgerton, famed for its blend of romance, scandal and social intrigue, follows the powerful Bridgerton family as they navigate love and status during London’s competitive marriage season.
Season Four is expected to centre on Benedict Bridgerton’s story, with fans anticipating a Cinderella-inspired romance layered with the show’s signature modern sensibilities.
Zheng’s casting quickly drew attention online, with Malaysians voicing their pride across social media.
On Instagram, user @mingying_ commented, “Wait, oh my God, Malaysian representation?! Welcome to the Ton,” while @thortillachips wrote, “Definitely going to keep an eye out for you on screen. #MalaysiaBoleh.” Zheng replied to the latter, saying, “Woop woop, Malaysia Boleh.”
The excitement extended to Threads, where user @little.miss.az.2024 remarked, “I did wonder, his tan looked so familiar, like a Malaysian tan,” while @srfichin added, “I knew he gave off Malaysian vibes.”
Beyond Zheng, the new season features another significant Malaysian connection through actress Katie Leung, widely recognised for her role as Cho Chang in the Harry Potter film franchise.
Leung, whose father is Malaysian, takes on the role of Lady Araminta Gun, a formidable and manipulative stepmother figure in the Cinderella-style arc involving Sophie Beckett.
Leung has built a diverse career across film, television, and theatre. Her casting adds further depth to the expanding ensemble of Season Four.
Online reactions suggest the inclusion of Southeast Asian actors has only heightened anticipation.
Threads user @moimori stated, “How can I not like season four with Southeast Asian representation. Welcome to the Ton, sir.”
With Malaysian talent stepping confidently into the world of the Ton, Bridgerton Season Four is shaping up to be not just a romantic spectacle but a landmark moment for Southeast Asian representation on the global stage.
