PETALING JAYA - The Malaysian film industry is set to welcome a fresh romantic comedy, Kata Hati, a production that blends humour, romance and the complexities of modern life into a story that goes beyond conventional love narratives.

Produced by Wayangworks Sdn Bhd and Filmscape Sdn Bhd, the film presents itself as a light and entertaining piece, but gradually unfolds into a deeper exploration of personal choices, identity and the realities behind fame.

Producer Muhammad Bahir said the inspiration behind the film stemmed from real observations within the entertainment industry, particularly the contrast between public image and private life.

“The idea to produce Kata Hati came about as, throughout our time working in this industry, we had the opportunity to meet many celebrities and were intrigued by the difference between the persona they show on camera and their real lives behind the lens.

“So we decided to create a story behind the glamorous world of a celebrity, infused with a storyline that is able to entertain audiences,” he said.

Directed by Nadiah Hamzah, the film centres on an unconventional romance between a rising actress and an e-hailing driver, portrayed by Nia Atasha and Yusof Hashim respectively, alongside Fazziq Muqris.

The cast is further strengthened by established names including Scha Alyahya, Taqim Zaki and Norreen Iman, with cameo appearances from Beto Kusyairy, Nabila Huda, Liyana Jasmay, Nina Kho and Shweta Sekhon.

Executive producer Juliana Foo said the film arrives at a time when audiences have been saturated with action and horror content, suggesting a renewed appetite for lighter, emotionally driven storytelling.

“It is clear that Kata Hati arrives as a modern fairy tale with elements of high-stakes romance, offering beautiful and unique moments for audiences to experience in cinemas,” she said.

From a creative standpoint, Nadiah emphasised that the film is designed to deliver a wide emotional range, combining humour and heartfelt moments within a distinctive narrative structure.

“Regarding the casting, Nia, Yusof and Fazziq were selected through auditions and it is undeniable that they are newcomers to the big screen.

“However, what surprised me the most was their dedication in delivering strong performances and their commitment truly deserves praise,” she said.

Nadiah said the film is intended to connect emotionally with audiences by capturing both the joy and vulnerability of love. She hopes it will evoke a range of feelings, from laughter to tears, while reminding viewers of the sweetness of being in love.

Filming was completed in August 2025 across Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, with the film scheduled for nationwide release on June 4.

The story follows Ayra Natasha, a rising star whose life begins to unwind after a viral incident during a major awards nomination night. In the midst of the fallout, she crosses paths with Imran Firdaus, an e-hailing driver who is unaffected by celebrity culture.

Their worlds collide further when he becomes her personal driver, setting the stage for a relationship that challenges both their perspectives on life and love.
