KUALA LUMPUR - Putting on a sheet mask for about 20 minutes before going to bed is now becoming a trend among people aspiring to achieve a smooth, hydrated and radiant complexion similar to the "glass skin” look popularised by South Korean celebrities.

The trend has also been fuelled by the emergence of various new products, including affordable 30-piece sheet mask packs designed for daily use over a month.

But are these sheet masks effective?

Consultant dermatologist at Assunta Hospital in Petaling Jaya Dr Ee Siew Li said sheet masks generally only provide hydration to the skin’s surface, as most of the active ingredients in the products work mainly on the epidermis and do not penetrate the deeper layers of the skin.

She said some sheet masks are specifically formulated to boost skin moisture.

However, she noted that certain products also contain active ingredients such as acids or fragrances that may cause irritation and damage the skin barrier if used too frequently, particularly by individuals with sensitive skin.

"When we use them, the skin may appear more hydrated and glowing, but the effect is only temporary and limited to the surface. Some users become overly obsessed with achieving ‘glass skin’ and wear sheet masks every night without understanding their skin’s actual needs.

"Daily use may not necessarily suit everyone, especially if the product contains certain active ingredients that could affect the skin’s condition,” she said.

Dr Ee said sheet masks are not an essential part of a skincare routine, and instead encouraged the public to return to a simpler basic routine, namely CTMP, which involves using a cleanser, targeted therapy such as acne medication, moisturiser and sunscreen for skin protection.

"But there is nothing wrong with using sheet masks as part of self-care for personal satisfaction, as long as it makes you happy and your skin does not develop any allergic reaction,” she said.

Dr Ee added that the increasingly popular 30-day sheet mask packs usually require preservatives to maintain formula stability and prevent contamination after repeated opening and use.

"When a product is opened every day, preservatives are necessary to prevent contamination from bacteria or fungi. Consumers, therefore, need to be more cautious because repeated exposure to certain substances can increase the risk of skin sensitivity over time.

"Although some products come with tweezers, they only help minimise direct contact. If the tweezers are left exposed and not cleaned after use, the risk remains the same as using bare hands,” she said, adding that single-use products are actually more hygienic. - BERNAMA
