A personal birthday tribute to a leader whose triumphs, controversies and convictions became part of the nation’s story.

Dear Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad,

As you celebrate your 101st birthday, I find myself thinking about the extraordinary journey you have travelled — a journey that has, in many ways, mirrored the journey of Malaysia itself.

Few Malaysians have had the privilege, or the burden, of shaping a nation’s story as profoundly as you have.

For many of us, you have been a constant presence throughout our lives.

We watched Malaysia change during your years as the country’s fourth prime minister — from a country still finding its confidence to one that dared to dream of competing on the global stage.

We saw highways stretch across the country, cities transform and landmarks rise that reflected a new sense of ambition.

You asked Malaysians to believe that we were capable of achieving more, that we should not measure ourselves by where we started but by where we wanted to go. That message stayed with many of us.

You were never a leader who simply occupied an office. You brought ideas, convictions and a sense of urgency. You challenged us to think differently, to question old assumptions and to imagine a future beyond our limitations.

But your journey, Tun, has never been a simple one.

Like all leaders who leave a deep mark on history, your record has inspired both admiration and criticism.

Many Malaysians continue to debate your decisions, your leadership style and the choices made during your long political career.

Perhaps that is inevitable for someone who has shaped so much. A quiet life leaves few footprints. A consequential one leaves many.

What many of us admire is your resilience. After decades in public life, you could have chosen a quieter path.

Yet you returned when many thought your political journey had ended.

At 92, you achieved what few imagined possible — becoming prime minister again and proving that determination does not come with an expiry date.

Even today, at 101, you continue to follow the affairs of the country you have served for so long. You continue to share your thoughts, defend your beliefs and engage in conversations about Malaysia’s future.

That passion is perhaps one of the most defining things about you.

Tun, as you look back on a century of life, I hope you take pride not only in the buildings, policies and institutions associated with your leadership, but also in the countless Malaysians whose hopes and ambitions were shaped by the era you led.

History will continue to examine your achievements and your shortcomings. That is the responsibility of history.

But today is about celebrating a remarkable milestone — the life of a man who has witnessed Malaysia’s transformation and played an undeniable role in that story.

Thank you, Tun, for the years of service, the sacrifices made and the determination you showed in pursuing your vision for the country.

May your 101st year bring you good health, peace and the warmth of family and friends.

Happy birthday, Tun.

With respect and appreciation,

A Malaysian who has witnessed your journey
