Prices of chicken and eggs likely to increase starting Feb, says livestock farmers association

Lee said, at the same time, the ceiling price of chicken eggs is also expected to increase by four cents each.
He said this is because the Malaysian Maximum Family Price Scheme (SHMKM) that set the ceiling price for chicken had caused losses to farmers, including wholesalers and retailers.
According to Lee, the scheme did not account for the operating costs and the price of imported feed which has increased, causing producers to lose up to RM3 million every month.
"We are shocked and disappointed with the ceiling price because the cost to raise 1,000 chickens is getting higher.
"In addition, the country does not produce corn or soybeans meant to be used for feed and it needed to be imported from abroad.
“In these two weeks, the price of corn has increased from RM1,300 to RM1,420 per tonne. Soybeans from RM2,200 but today, in the last two weeks, it has reached RM2,400, ” he told Sinar Harian on Friday.
Commenting further, Lee who is also the Chairman of the Melaka Livestock Breeders' Associations said, the increase in prices is not meant to hit a target profit of 20 to 30 per cent for each production but much less.
