SHAH ALAM - Political Analyst Dr Oh Ei Sun stated that the Malaysian Prime Minister should be smart in his approach regarding the controversy surrounding the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki shareholding purchases.

“If I was Ismail Sabri, I would be smart about this by perhaps removing or transferring Azam Baki to a less sensitive position.

“This is what I would do if I am a smart politician and I have my political career ahead of me,” he said during the Wacana English Edition titled 'Reforming MACC - With or Without Azam Baki' on Jan 27.

Oh, who is Singapore Institute of International Affairs Senior Fellow, said it is plausible that the people will prefer to report any corruption practices they know about to the media first as it would be made public.

He said people would choose to do that instead of reporting to the MACC since they have lost their faith in the national anti-corruption commission that was supposed to function as a law enforcement agency.

“What if I totally lose faith in MACC as a law enforcement agency and I do know of some sort of corrupt practices, but I want to protect myself by not reporting to the MACC and revealing that to the media so that it comes to the public,” he said.

He also of the opinion that this issue would bring a major impact to the political structure of Malaysia if it isn't resolved in the near future.

“By continuing to protect Azam Baki essentially in keeping him in the current position, I think this government will pay quite a hefty political price, if not now certainly in the near future,” he added.
