Bollywood's 'disco king' Bappi Lahiri dies at 69

NEW DELHI -- Bollywood music composer and singer Bappi Lahiri, fond of wearing flashy clothes and jewellery, died at the age of 69 in a Mumbai hospital.
Lahiri was treated for a medical condition known as obstructive sleep apnea and recurrent chest infection.
He was discharged after a month on Monday but taken back to the hospital after his condition deteriorated on Tuesday.
Lahiri suffered from Covid-19 last year.
The singer, who popularised disco music in the cinema in the 1980s and 90s, was known for making loud fashion statements with his ostentatious appearances, and wore thick gold chains around his neck.
Many Indian film celebrities and politicians on Wednesday offered condolences on his death.
Playback singer Shreya Ghoshal called Lahiri "the most iconic personality, a true rock star of our country."
Born in West Bengal, Lahiri contested a parliamentary seat in his home state as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the 2014 general election but failed to win. -- Bernama
