JOHOR BAHRU: Barisan Nasional has won 40 seats out of 56 seats in Johor polls, said the Election Commission.

It needed 38 seats to win a two-thirds majority.

BN’s Datuk Hasni Mohammad, 63 is now set to return as the Johor mentri besar.

The Johor Umno chief had won a majority of 5,859 out of 10,896 voters in a four-cornered contest in the Benut state seat.

Hasni had said the polls were crucial to form a stable and strong government to allow rapid economic growth and foreign investments.

After tonight’s win, Johor voters will not wait for the promised development to be implemented immediately.

Hasni sought the dissolve the state assembly despite holding a one-seat majority, following the death of former mentri besar Datuk Osman Sapian of Bersatu.

BN has also promised rapid growth after a two-year pandemic lockdown.

EC had said PH won 11 seats, PN (3), Muda (1) and PKR (1).
