Sustainable packaging is the way to go for Lotus's Malaysia

SHAH ALAM - Lotus’s Malaysia revealed that they are working on sustainable packaging for its stationery category, to reduce its carbon footprint.

Its Technical Manager (Stationery), Jocelyn Yap announced that their goal is to change the packaging materials of the stationery packaging into 100 percent recyclable materials.

Currently, 95 percent of the stationery packaging has already been converted to recyclable materials.

“For the sustainable packaging project, we divided our packaging materials into 3 categories which are preferred, intermediate and prohibited.

Jocelyn Yap is happy to inform that 95 percent of the stationery packaging has already converted to recyclable materials at the moment.

“The materials that are recyclable and not harmful to humans and the environment are included in the preferred category while the materials that are non-recyclable and harmful are put under the prohibited category,” she told Sinar Daily.

She shared that only the materials from the preferred category will be selected to create the sustainable packaging.

For stationery products, they use PP plastic which falls under the preferred category where it is recyclable and not harmful to humans and the environment.

“We will use the materials from the preferred category, of course, but there are certain circumstances where we are not able to use them and we will find other materials to pack the products.

“For example for food packaging, some materials could affect the food like biscuits,s” she said.

When asked about the cost to produce the sustainable packaging, she said there is a good balance for that since they are able to use the environmentally friendly materials but still ensure an affordable price to the customers.
