SHAH ALAM - Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin meetings with various political leaders have been seen as ‘desperate and shameless’ by political pundits.

Political analyst Dr Azmi Hassan said the former prime minister’s actions of seeking help from Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), Parti Warisan (Warisan) and Pakatan Harapan for help was a desperate measure.

The term ‘desperate measure’ was also used by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Muhyiddin.

“Pejuang has nothing to offer to PN but PN, on the other hand, has lots to offer to Pejuang and yet they were still rejected by the new party.

“This shows the standing of Muhyiddin among political parties.

“Bersatu (a coalition party of PN) needs to act very fast with Muhyiddin (party president) at the helm, it is going to be very difficult for Bersatu and PN to be accepted by the opposition parties.

“And luckily, Bersatu has a lot of capable leaders but these leaders are either ex-PKR or ex-Umno,” he told Sinar Daily.

Azmi, who is a senior fellow at Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, added that Bersatu needs a change in leadership if the party wanted to get itself out of troubled waters.

Muhyiddin, he said, needed to step down as both party president and chairman of the coalition.

“The results of Melaka and Johor polls should be a clear indicator that Bersatu needs a new leader,” he said.

Weighing on the same issue, a political analyst Prof Dr Kartini Aboo Talib said based on the trend and behaviour of Muhyiddin, he was indeed desperate but had the need for the other parties to see that he had good intentions and not what ex-Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had described him as; a traitor.

"Muhyiddin is desperate for support and he wants to see those who are facing corruption charges be brought to justice and get the sentence they deserve.

"However, he might also want everyone to see that his intentions are good, not as a traitor to Dr Mahathir," she told Sinar Daily.

During a press conference on April 1, Dr Mahathir revealed that Muhyiddin had come to him and asked Pejuang for help despite knowing the financial and political situation of the party.

The Pejuang chairman had said that they will not be supporting someone who has failed as prime minister.
