Jeli crash: Two killed, three seriously injured

JELI - Two motorists were killed while three others were seriously injured in an accident involving two cars at KM108 of the East Coast Expressway (LPT), here, on Friday.

The incident happened at about 10.45pm.

The deceased were identified as Mohd Hazlan Ibrahim, 33, who was the driver of a Perodua Alza and Proton Wira driver Muhamad Baijuri Mohd Shariff, 26.

Those who sustained serious injuries were Mohd Hazlan's wife Norshara Ezila Mohd Asri, 31, and their two daughters Nur Aqeela Hafiyya, 8, and Nur Areeqa Hazhiyya, 6.

Meanwhile, their one-year old toddler Mohd Akil Arash was unhurt.

Kelantan Traffic Enforcement and Investigation department chief Superintendent Shuhaimi Jusoh said Mohd Hazlan’s body was found near the scene while Muhamad Baijuri’s body was found inside a drain about 10 metres away from the scene, eight hours after the accident.

“When personnel from the Jeli operations centre arrived at the scene after receiving a call regarding the incident, they found that a victim has died while three others were injured.

“The second body was found in a drain about 10 metres away from the scene at about 7am.

“Those who were injured were brought to the Tanah Merah and Jeli Hospitals,” he said when contacted, today.

He said initial investigation revealed that the car drove by Muhamad Baijuri was believed to have lost control causing the car to skid to the opposite lane before crashing into Mohd Hazlan’s car.

At first, he said they thought that Muhamad Baijuri had fled from the scene after the incident before his body was later found about 10 metres away from the scene.

Suhaimi said Mohd Hazlan and his family were on their way to his in-laws' house in Batu Melintang, here, after breaking their fast at his parents’ house in Kampung Kalai, in the same district.

The case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
