SEREMBAN - Two people were killed and five others seriously injured in an accident involving a tourist bus and a car, at KM 285.5 of the North-South Expressway northbound, early today.

Nilai district deputy police chief DSP Mat Ghani Lateh said that the crash, which claimed the lives of the driver of the tourist bus and one of its 19 passengers, was ferrying 14 foreign nationals. They are Indonesians (four), Singaporeans (three), Canadians (two), Philippines (three), and one each from China and Spain.

He said that the preliminary investigation at the scene found that a tourist bus, owned by LA Holidays Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd, was ferrying 20 passengers, including the driver, from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.

"The bus is suspected of hitting a bridge pillar on the right side of the expressway, before swerving to the left and hitting a Proton Wira car, which was in the left lane, and crashed into the left shoulder of the road,” he said in a statement here today.

He said that the bus driver, 33, and an Indonesian woman passenger, 42, were confirmed dead at the scene, due to the impact of the collision.

Five bus passengers were reported to have suffered serious injuries, with 13 other passengers sustaining minor injuries.

"The passenger of the Proton Wira car suffered minor injuries, while the driver escaped unhurt," he said, adding that all injured victims received treatment at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital (HTJ) near here.

The two deceased victims were taken to the same hospital for the post-mortem process, and the case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987. - BERNAMA
