SHAH ALAM - DAP's Secretary-General Anthony Loke Siew Fook has told Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to stop making "flip-flop" statements, stating the premier needs to be more assertive and consistent in his stand.

This comes after Ismail Sabri on Monday indicated that he is in no rush to call for general elections, contrary to speculation that polls may be held before the year ends.

He told Nikkei Asia that rising costs in food and other living expenses were among the reasons to push back the elections, which only need to be called by September next year.

Loke in a statement said: "however, in just 48 hours, he changed his tone while speaking at the Barisan Nasional Convention yesterday, saying he would not wait for even one more second to dissolve Parliament if BN was ready after being pushed and pressured by kleptocratic clusters to dissolve Parliament."

He further said the decision to advise the Yang-di Pertuan Agong to dissolve Parliament is in the hands of the prime minister.

"This important decision should not be influenced by unrelated parties who are only concerned with their political survival," he said.

Loke further added the prime minister needs to give a "clearer political message" to the people and to the outside world.

"If he really wants to address the issue of inflation instead of calling elections in the near future, then he as Prime Minister, he needs to find consensus across parties so that the entire national focus is on the agenda of helping the people," he pointed out.

He further said DAP is ready to face elections. "If Parliament is dissolved, DAP is ready with its PH partners to enter the arena and campaign as hard as possible."

"The prime minister needs to be consistent and firm in his stance. Statements and messages that are “flip-flop” will only lead to continued political instability and will further harm the country’s economic situation," he added.
